What does FOBamerican stand for?

FOBamerican Elephant Logo Representing Asian American | www.FOBamerican.comFirst Off The Boat American.

First Off The Boat American is a spin on words from the phrase Fresh Off The Boat. It represents the first generation of families that immigrated over to America from another country.

“Fresh Off the Boat” is a phrase used to describe minorities that immigrated to America. Usually this is a slang describing immigrants with strong accents and lack of perceived American standards.

I was one of the first generations in my family raised here in America, so that means I grew up in a very traditional Asian household compared to many of my peers that were, for the most part, just American.

I mean, I’m not quite fully Asian, and I’m not a typical American. I’d say I’m the best of both worlds. I didn’t realize how different I was raised until I started going to school, meeting new non-Asian friends, and especially during college.

This site was created with hopes of remembering where I’ve come from, who I am, and how I’m going to make a difference.

Coincidentally, I’m not the only one. There are so many other Asian Americans that have maybeRoyal Lao Classical Dancers In Authentic Attire | www.FOBamerican.com adapted well to their differentiating cultures; whereas others may have just gotten the epiphany of their distinct lifestyle. Either way, I hope I can connect with anyone interested in learning more about Asian Americans.

I can’t wait to share some of my experiences that I’m sure will make you giggle, shed a few tears, or give you a boost of motivation. No matter what you feel, I’m just blessed to be able to share these moments with you.

Not only can you expect to read some of my own personal experiences and beliefs, but I look forward to shining a light on some of my fellow Asian-Americans out there impacting the world.

There will also be many blog series incorporating stories of my family that were raised in Laos. I’ve already shared my mother’s experience in Laos. Read part 1 here.

I also will be sharing lots of great authentic home-made recipes with you all, which can be found here at FOBchef.
